The Night Sky for September 2010: A Stargazer's Observing Guide

Aug 17, 2010 Kelly Whitt

Moonrise over Four Peaks Mountain - Lisa Langell

The planets clustered in the west succumb to twilight as Jupiter begins its reign of the night. September also brings the equinox and the Harvest Moon.

The long hours of summer daylight are hastening to an end. The effect is more extreme the farther north an observer is. For someone in Miami, Florida, the sun rises at 7:01 a.m. and sets at 7:40 p.m. on September 1, and by September 30, the sun rises at 7:13 a.m. and sets at 7:09 p.m. This amounts to only a 12 minute difference of daylight in the morning and a 31 minute difference in the evening. But for a location such as Minneapolis, Minnesota, the sun rises at 6:36 a.m. and sets at 7:50 p.m. on September 1 and by September 30 the sun rises at 7:10 a.m. (a 34 minute difference) and sets at 6:55 p.m. (a 55 minute difference).

The September Equinox and the Harvest Moon
In the Northern Hemisphere, the September Equinox brings the first day of fall. On the equinox, the sun rises directly in the east and sets directly in the west. The exact moment of equinox for 2010 is September 22, 11:09 p.m. EDT. For locations farther east than the east coast of the United States, the equinox will occur after midnight and therefore autumn begins in these locations one day later, on September 23.

September 23 is also the date of the Harvest Moon, the full moon for the month. The precise moment of full moon is at 5:17 a.m. EDT. Most people first notice the full moon as it rises in the east around sunset. On September 22, the full moon will rise at 99.6% lit, as it moves into full phase, and by moonrise on September 23, the date of the full moon, the moon will actually be farther past its peak of full phase and only appear at 99.4% lit. However, each night the moon will be so full it will seem as if there are two full moons at sunset in September.

Outcomes

What comes out isn't always what went in...
I am expecting something to be a certain way, and then when least I am prepared for it,
I get another answer
One that is surprising to me
Or is disappointing

Not sure why that is
guess i didn't understand
Or maybe didn't like
Maybe it wasn't me at all
Yeah thats it...

Change

I dont like it..thought I did but i do not...
Takes too much time to prepare for
Makes me sad and happy at the same time
Cant find what I'm looking for
Or remember where I found it

So why must I why do I have to change the sheets?
Change the music on the ipod?
Change the sound of my voice to suit someone
Or change the speed I am walking at

Do you need something changed?
I don't...just want it to stay the same for a while
Rather enjoy things the way they are
I think the reason is others don't like it
Makes them feel good if I do

The Gastronomic Gardener
I believe gardening and cooking go hand in hand. I encourage people to plant some plants - vegetable or blooming, get outside and get fresh air, sweat and exercise. Good food is one of the bases of health and happiness. Good food need not be complicated or difficult. It should be top quality, local when possible, and made where you know what went into it. -David P Offut

Hope....

There is some of this for us moms who can't help but worry a little about the boys we have watched playing the dirt...riding bikes all summer's day...surfing and swimming and tossing that basketball back and forth for hours at a time. One has to wonder if the playing has ended for a time...the need to skate hasn't...but one mom can only hope he has gotten a little played out and wants to grow up now. The play changes and so it should...as well as the hopes that we mommas have that they will never lose their dreams and sense of wonder in the play they will take on as life brings to them responsibilities woven with playfulness. We have given them all they need to have hope of their own. Take big steps my little man, and find some of your own hopes for your future. It is yours, not mine...dream on my little hockey player, and keep on sweating it out...you always did when you played hard. And breathe...breathe deep while you dream!!! Good luck with all of your new play mates in the big bowl of life...Skate on!!!!

The First Phone Call

Saturday, One week Later....
I missed the call...returned it later at midnight, of course he will be up at midnight on a Saturday night, who would I be kidding? So he answered, he was so happy to hear my voice he told me he missed me...didn't need anything, has homework, and might make it to the skatepark for the second day of festivities with Volcom..He skated the first day in the competition not thinking he posted, but had a great time anyway. I felt special that he even answered, he was at a party he says, I could hear people in the background talking, and I was happy he wasnt alone, but then I never worried he would be. This is my social creature! My boy! I really miss him!

Cotton Balls in Mammoth

College Bound

Onward and upward....
It is that time when little boys have to grow up and leave home. Go ahead leave me here, to clean up your mess left behind...Wait a minute thats not what I meant...I meant that I had to clean your room up and dust, wash the things you didn't get to while you were going to school and going out with the girls and getting dinner with your homies, and going to concerts, oh yeah and work. Then there was the job that took you away from organizing a closet, throwing out the old clothes and shoes that don't fit anymore. The school sweatshirts, vests, button downs...The books that never got read, much less ever cracked. They are all there for you to peruse at your leisure on Thanksgiving holiday. Or Christmas or summer next, when you go back to working at the skatepark again. The best job a teenager like you could have. It was easy, admit it. You didn't get up early, or have to sweep anything. You sat around in the office,,,and got chicken pox the summer before you went away to college. Hey, at least you finally got them, while your sister has not..might be the first thing you have outdone her at when it comes to that sort of thing. She has never skate boarded in her life though. Perhaps you might teach her some day...Goodness knows we have all seen you compete and have enjoyed those times...I look forward to seeing you do more of that, it brought you such joy.
As I hung up all those clothes you have thrown upon the closet shelf, I found pleasure in looking at the sizes of your hockey jerseys change and grow...the T-ball jersey that merged with soccer and then became basketball only to find hockey and skating...I will not forget the snacks or the water bottles i filled...team mom's or awful coaches who didn't deserve their end of the season gifts...to the coach who asked to take you home with him, he admired your verve for the game. So much so that you were requested to be on his team the following year...Or the hockey coach who wanted to have you on his club team when he opened a new rink merely an hours drive out of town..just a great excuse to be with you and get to know my wonderful son that much better. Another day to see your cute cheeks, and dimples that made my heart melt when you smiled at me with those big puppy dog blue eyes. How I loved being amused by you and your sense of humor...The way you could make me laugh instantaneously will always be a treasured gift, keeping close to me those thoughts of your impressions you did of Austin Powers. Or the escalator behind the kitchen counter, I do remember these wonderful moments Kevin. Now I see the wonderful young man you are and the care for human kind you have developed in your character. From the group you were chosen to assist in Jr. high because you had compassion enough, how proud I was of you the day the counselor called me to tell me you were joining in that courageous undertaking! What a heart! You aren't a selfish person, you always remembered to be hospitable to the guests in your home, offering a drink of water to Cecilia when she was here! Those things make me smile..they are your heart, your care, your kindnesses. They warm a mother's heart. Now back to reality boy...get the school work done on time, the homework finished, the dorm room cleaned up..laundry. Oh and I am sure you will remember to call me once in a while and make me laugh! Enjoy the sunrise and the sunsets...those views and snow capped mountains of Mammoth. I love you with all your faults and all of the mistakes that are turning you into a gentle caring solid young adult! Carry on!

Daddies and little girls....

What is it about little girls and their daddies? Get's me every time I see a picture, or hear a song.
This is not going to be so easy is it? Watching her come down that isle, reflecting on memories of her and her daddy... me and mine...wishing I could rewind the hands of time, and watching the future in a few moments time. Twists my tears into something new... dance with Daddy... dancing there, twirling, swingin' on your father's arm.... so sweet!
Never have I felt so special to be called the Mother of the Bride! A dream come true for me to see, a most special little girl and her life to be...
Daddies are special...Mine was too!

Oh would you like to swing on a vine????

They are coming back again!!!!!

Greener and fuller than ever!!

I want to make wine , but they aren't
of that variety...do thompson's make good wine??? Oh well, whatever! Next!

That is my attempt to edit a photo of a boysenberry bush with the first bloom! Yeah it's exciting to see in this State of California! And for my next trick I will be showing some raspberry blooms when they arrive! Stay tuned folks!

My Newest Sunday Best! New to me!

You will want to purchase a bottle of "Bella Sun Luci" Sun dried tomatoes . I get them at Costco. On the lid is a packet with recipes, that are so simple to follow. I pick and choose my ingredients based on the things in my pantry. On Sunday I chose to make the recipe for potato gnocci w/ spinach and sun dried tomatoes. (these are sold in the markets already to cook)
I only had macaroni noodles, and used them only to find they were perfect with this recipe!

Cook them, drain, saute the tomatoes for a minute or two until warm with some of the oil in the bottle, add the spinach and toss with parmesan and feta, topping with pinenuts. The easy part is the spinach isn't cooked.
You can also serve cool, add chicken if you like, and there you have it! Bon Apetite!
Today I will make French Onion Soup, my favorite recipe of Soups, for a friend I made at our local wine store. She wanted something to eat with a White Burgandy...and so it goes...

My how she's grown into a beautiful young lady! So proud of her and her fiance!
Thirty days to count - down...so exciting and so much work, wow! But fun! Won't be long and that little girl will be marrying the most wonderful boy in the world! Mommy loves you!
this is the Grand Finale- unedited... in it's natural form...adventures in the sky!
This is shot # 2
The beginning #1
Let's try another spectacular moment in the sky picture..the master of the sky does it again.
Becca and I headed to the tailors to have the necessary adjustments made to her wedding dress, not knowing where we would be lead to find another dress...So True!!!
And there you have it, another wonderful display of clouds, right in my own backyard...Amazing! The sun was shining brightly, but as i stepped outside to look for something to photograph the sun was staring at me...I took the shot and noticed how gloomy it apppeared which wasn't anything like what I was seeing. A nice surprise indeed.
Once upon a time in a quaint little village in the south of France, there was a place where everything kind and soft and gentle was born...She would be called, " Anjolie", meaning the Garden Angel. It wasn't long after she had arrived into this peaceful little garden, that she began to wander in it, looking for soft petals to lie upon, to rest her curls and to dream for a while as she stared at the clouds. She was often found to be picking up empty garden snails, for she was not afraid of the beauty that surrounded her there. This was something that made her giggle, and smile and come alive with joy! These became little houses where her rolly polly bugs could find shelter and lady bugs would stay for a while to catch their breaths and then be carried away. It wasn't long before Anjolie would climb on her olive tree perch, and swing her legs with excitement over another days findings in her secret garden where she could be free to play while the butterflies danced around her curly head...
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh She's dreaming......

This is the song that depicts her so well...

Clouds 365 Project

The King of Clouds did not disappoint today...When I look out my back door and find this most amazing display in the sky, I think that I might like to fly among these clouds, or at least I wish that I could. My stomach is actually too weak to fly on I kite, or a parachute, or even a roller coaster.

Train wrote a song called "When I look to the sky", as well as several songs on the album such as, " I Love every Color"...The album is called, My Private Nation, and includes many hits you will recognize.
Download from i tunes and escape, dream, or just take a few minutes wishing or letting your mind wander!
"When I look to the sky", is 3:59 minutes long. I promise you, you will not regret it!

February Playmates of the month

Happy Birthday Maria and Terri...Especially you Maria now that she's 40! Oh yeah , I made these cute little cakes and the chocolate was delish!

My Nephew Tim

Gotta love this guy! Not only is he adorable, funny, kind and big hearted, but he's given himself to the Military !He's a fighter alrighter! He can leap tall buildings...Some of us know what I'm referring to, other's may wonder. His spirit amazes me...the way he jumps in with both feet, barely thinking twice...Perhaps he's alway's been a Marine at heart. Tim, here's to you, I am so proud of you and what you stand for, I support you...Love You, and Appreciate your willingness to serve our country! This excludes any of my convictions about the government, because THIS is about You and your big HEART!!! It's showing little nephew. Okay, wait...maybe I have a soft place in my heart for him since my mom and dad met at El Toro Marine base.
Can't wait to see you next week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

Farming

Okay... so I was in a strange mood when I did this...I'm a multi tasker what can I say? It's one of those strange farmville things that I have talked about...We feel happy, playful, creative, whatever, and just do funny things to amuse ourselves when it's rainy outside...Try it, you will be strange too. You might even surprise yourself. Or not!

I will share this very simple recipe: You only need a few basics from your pantry:

Garlic powder( if desired)
Powdered Ginger
Soy sauce, or Tamari(wheat free soy sauce) preferably reduced sodium,
A bag of mixed (these were .99c) vegetables,
a bag of bean sprouts, found in the produce section, and some
grape seed oil for frying.

Now heat that skillet extra hot, add a small amount of oil, and toss in veggies you have chosen to use, and the sprouts, give it about 2-3 minutes, while moving constantly with the handle in a back and forth motion. Toss in a pinch of garlic, ginger,( to suit your own tastes), and a splash of soy sauce, and voila!
It was just one of those things that I had to do! Sometimes the spirit moves me...Have you ever wished for something and pretended it was so.....set a place for someone who can't be there?
May sound strange, but if you were alone, and thought about someone you missed, you might do it. Let your self play! Let yourself by giving permission to your playful side...Of course we know it's make believe, but isn't that why we go to movies and respect actors who get to play at being another character??? Life's a stage! Play it! Don't forget to make your friend a nice cup of Yerba Mate' Tea ...because it's good for you and tastes good hot or cold!

Clouds 365 Project

These are from my backyard, without any editing! My goal was to photograph clouds, but I was given a spectacular sunset.

Promises

The past week was filled with patience...lessons in patience that is!

As the days went by, the rain got stronger. I was becoming more impatient, waiting for another photo opportunity.
My goal was to photograph clouds. There weren't many clouds coming my way. Just a more dark and gloomy emptiness that seemed to grow darker as the week progressed. I found myself growing more impatient as the sky got darker and the clouds were fewer.
I considered hunting for rainbows instead. Again no success with chasing rainbows. Nothing... there was nothing... Nothing left for me to do except wait. And wait.
Wait for something to break in the weather...anything...a cloud, a rainbow, a star?
No photos of clouds and no photos of rainbows to fill a scrapbook with.
After a five day wait... I finally received my reward. And a great reward it was!

The most beautiful sunset painted in the sky...Crisp and clean, full of color and vibrance, as well as being filled with patience!
How sweet the reward that I have received. A good lesson in patience for me.

Sunday's Best

B is for Butter.
Always room for butter balls...The ones mom used to and still does make...sourdough roll anyone?

Better later than never....
Costco's Halibut Steaks are right off the boat...Alaska boats that is!
Cover with Sourcream, mixed with a little Mayo,a pinch of garlic salt too, and bake...Voila...Doesn't get any easier than that...I believe it was a teaspoon of SCream, and 1/4 tsp. of Mayo with oil! Non of that FAT-FREE Stuff.
Baked slow at 350, for 20-25 minutes depending on the size and thickness of the piece. Garnish with something green, maybe cilantro leaves, or green scallions, perhaps some salsa, or mango would also work!
A nice side dish to include could be butternut squash, fresh beets with tops steamed, adds rich color...A salad of baby greens, EVOO and Fig Balsamic Vinagrette, from Williams Sonoma sprinkled ever so gently upon the leaves and if you have them, include a few fresh blueberries!
YUM YUM!
A wine to pair with this might be a Napa... Souvignon Blanc, ... 5Vinter's Admiral's 2007 about 18. to make Sunday dinner complete.

Paradise

A place that I would like to fly to! My love of sunsets has brought me to another level...Somewhere over the rainbow...way up high, there's a place that I dream of once in a lullaby...I'm wishing! I'll wait! For now, perhaps it is just a dream. I can keep dreaming!!! And dreaming! And Dreaming!

Try a new recipe

Have you ever tried making something out of nothing? When there is very little in the cupboard, or you don't have any clue what to do with whatcha have, try this:
A crock pot
A sweet potato skinned, and chop each 1 inch hunk into four sections....cubed I suppose for those of you who do it blindly.
A leek, washed, and sliced
A box or a can of some type of chicken broth
A chicken breast
A handful of whole baby carrots
Now take those things you have haphazardly thrown in the crock pot, and turn up the heat to high, cooking all day!
And see whatcha get!
And some spices that you like after it's cooked...add whatever you like!
That's what is so much fun!
If you have someone that is willing to open a bag of spinach greens or a ready made salad bag, they go together just fine!
And have fun with it!

A Must see!

Patience

What is patience anyway?
While waiting for the sunset to arrive, I found myself becoming so impatient.
Was I getting ready for another day to end, or looking forward to the beginning of another end to something I look forward to?
While there are so many things I want to do during the day to keep busy, I was actually anxious about seeing if it would be anything like the sunset we were so graced with yesterday! What I realize is... it doesn't matter...just enjoy its beauty and color, and all that it is for this moment, for it's gone so quickly.
Tomorrow, if the sun shines there will be another, perhaps more colorful to enjoy!

Memory

Sometimes I walk in the front door only to find a most beautiful sky waiting for me at my back door.
It reminds me at the end of the day that some of my dreams have been fulfilled...This colorful memory of a day spent rushing to accomplish all I have to accomplish has satisfied me, as well as left a taste of disappointment for not doing enough with it.
How will I use the memory of a colorful sky to keep me focused on those things that are important and meaningful to make another day of light a fulfilling one?

From Sunrise to....Sunset

Peaceful time of day, though I have noticed not nearly as peaceful as the time of day when the birds start to sing, and the sky opens up to reveal a new day.
Now that the hustle and bustle of the holidays are over, the sunsets have become a peaceful and quiet retreat. Much like those quiet mornings had been.

Fresh Food

Brussel Sprouts are cute little things before taken off the stalks!

Giving this year

Take some time this year to give to someone who needs your help...it may be a coworker, or a homeless person...Even a batch of cookies to the neighborhood fire dept. Remember those who serve your city or serve our country! We all need to be thanked. Please feel free to share how you have made a difference in someones life today! I care about what good you may have done, and I would enjoy hearing about it!
I will be playing at the Flu Clinic for the day tomorrow...Wish me luck!

Sunrise- New Year- New Week

The sunrise greeted me this morning with a bright shining face ... all aglow in the winter sky
giving me a spirited reply...
I may have to come back for more tomorrow...

Sundays Best

One of my favs' to serve on Sunday's are brussel sprouts fresh off the stalk...
Trader Joe's sells them at a very good price.

Once you have cut them off the stalk, put in a saucepan with a little water, evoo, and kosher salt.

Braising is a very quick way to make a delicious vegie tastier.
They look as if you went to alot of trouble to make.
Enjoy with leftover baked Alaskan Halibut...
